pure snow
The buzz about apparel built with green materials continues to grow. Recycled polyester. Organic cotton. Merino. Bamboo. Coconuts.
But a green story should go beyond fabrics. Green product needs to be sustainable up and down the supply chain or tell a larger story
about how to rethink design and manufacturing. With that in mind, we sorted through the greenwashing and found some of the best
sustainable-apparel stories on the show fl oor. — DOUG SCHNITZSPAHN
PISTIL BOILED WOOL
People count too. This Oregon hat company sources lanacotta,
boiled wool, from an Italian family that’s been producing the
material organic and chemical-free for three generations.
PATAGONIA
ASCENSIONIST
Made of completely recycled
materials and completely
recyclable itself through
Patagonia’s Common Threads
program, this water-resistant
soft shell is a highly technical
garment with a legitimate
green supply-chain story.
MARMOT DRICLIME
CATALYST WINDSHIRT
Marmot rethought its ever-popular
multi-use standby this season. The shell
is now built with the highest percentage
of recycled material possible —
from a 100-percent recycled zipper to
88- percent recycled poly face fabric.
Gannett’s CROP
Saves Cash
Freeskiing goddess Alison
Gannett has a plan to make
green, well, greener. Her
C.R.O.P. system, which she
presented at the Show, is
designed to save businesses
money while lowering their
impact on the planet. C.R.O.P.
stands for: Calculate, fi gure out
your impact or carbon footprint;
Reduce, fi nd creative money-saving ways to
lower it; Offset through reputable programs what
you can’t reduce; and Produce, or start creating your
own energy through clean systems like solar power.
And Gannett walks the walk. She drove to the show
in a 140-mile-per-gallon SUV. — DS
VOLVO — OFFICIAL CAR OF
ADOPT GREEN
This Toronto-based manufacturer
sourced a whole
line of organic wool, organic
cotton and bamboo blends
for these hats. Furthermore, its
Sketch program helps underprivileged
kids get exposure
for their artwork.
EESA
You’ll fi nd a lot of bamboo-and-cotton products
on the fl oor, but Eesa’s new sexy base
layer line is 100-percent bamboo, eschewing
cotton that can detract from the sustainable
fabric’s anti-stink and wicking properties.
