V98 - Not your ordinary booth.
When you put out the show daily, you can expect at least half a
dozen drop-ins a day to announce, “I have the only really new
product at SIA!”
After awhile, you take them with a grain — maybe a tablespoon
— of salt.
But there is something genuinely new at this year’s SIA, and it’s not
a single product or initiative, but an assemblage of them. They’re
gathered together — 71 of them — under the rubric, ECOsource,
artfully displayed in the unusual mega-booth V98.
According to Mary Cecile Neville, Associate Director of Trade Marketing
for SIA, what holds the exhibitors together is the concept
green. “Our whole industry is increasingly aware of the environment.
SIA is trying to get greener as well. So we’ve put together
a market-segment exhibit that showcases the green products and
initiatives of our industry.”
When SIA came up with the idea of ECOsource, they had no real
idea of what kind of response it would get. According to Neville,
they need not have worried. “We launched it in November and
received an overwhelming response from exhibitors. With exhibitors
on display, it’s a sold-out house.”
The ECOsource booth shows products made from recycles and
sustainable materials. And here, the medium is the message. The
booth, itself, is a model of making green effective and stylish. Neville
explains: “We worked with Dept. of Energy, a Seattle design fi rm,
to create an exhibit structure out of eco-friendly materials.”
Next to each display, the exhibitors have written a description of
how their product is eco-friendly.
The ECOsource exhibitors cover a broad spectrum of SIA. Among
them: Skea clothing, Peter Grumm headwear, Sessions water bottles,
Smith Optics eyewear. Major players Helly Hansen, Patagonia and
Burton are part of the crew. — JULES OLDER
ECOsourcers
Two of the ECOsource partners illustrate the commitment of
the larger group. Meet Arbor and Venture Snowboards..
Arbor
According to Bob
Carlson, Arbor’s
founder, “Our goal
is is using environmentally
friendly
materials to improve
performance and
style. So we’re not

mise performance
just to be green for green’s sake.”
Arbor makes snowboards, skates and apparel, so Carlson
continues: “But people need clear air to skate, snow to ride,
and clean water to surf.”
Carlson is especially high on Arbor’s bamboo clothing.
“We’ve been making bamboo apparel for three years.
Hemp t-shirts are heavy and not that comfortable, but
bamboo is silky. And bamboo is anti-bacterial, so no pit
stains — and it grows like a weed.”
Based in Venice, California and going into 13th season,
Arbor has been at SIA for every one of those years.
This year, Arbor is at B-60. .
Venture
“We’ve been green
from the get-go,
with the goal of
creating a more
environmentally
friendly snowboard.”
So says
Lisa and Klemens
(they speak with

one voice) Branner,
owners of Venture Snowboards.
The get-go was 1999, when Klemens, straight out of
studying mechanical engineering and renewable energy
at Colorado State, started building snowboards. Since
snowboarding and environmentalism were his two passions,
Venture seemed the natural next step.
They take their environmentalism seriously. They use only
Forest Stewardship Council-certifi ed poplar and ash for all
their boards, powering their factory with wind since 2004.
The Klemens say, “Both of these are fi rsts in the industry and
establish Venture as a leader on the green front.”
Last year was their fi rst at SIA. This year they’re at H86.
