INFLUENCES KIDS AT AN EARLY AGE TO
GENERATE MORE BUSINESS FOR SNOWSPORTS
Infl uencing kids at an early age is every marketer’s dream. For snowsports companies,
attracting a 10-year-old can mean a lifetime expenditure of more than $52,000. Sound like
a tough nut to crack? Winter Feels Good has been paving the way since 2003, going right
to the heart of a kid’s daily routine — schools, scout troops and community organizations
like the YM and YWCA.
The Winter Feels Good national outreach program has increased its success in reaching
“adult infl uencers of children” with a family-friendly healthy lifestyle message that encourages
participation in snowsports among potential NEW customers. The nucleus of the
program is the award-winning www.winterfeelsgood.com Web site, which includes information
specially tailored to generating new customers. A database of physical education
and classroom teachers, scout leaders and recreation professionals now tops more than
6,000 names. And that’s just for starters. One elementary level physical education teacher
represents an average of 500 children.
SIA’s new “Learning Module CD,” produced in partnership with Snow Monsters, is making
inroads among practitioners who encourage physical activity among children at an early
age. “If kids are going to learn an activity then we want it to be a snowsport,” said Mary Jo
Tarallo, director of education for SIA and project coordinator for WFG. “If we are not visible
at schools, scout troops and recreational and parks groups, we will be out of sight, out of
mind. Other industries are doing their best to take advantage of these opportunities.”
Winter Feels Good also partners with the National Ski Areas Association (NSAA), the Professional
Ski Instructors of America/American Association for Snowboard Instructors (PSIA/
AASI), the Cross Country Ski Areas Association (CCSAA) the United States Ski/Snowboard
Association (USSA) and various state resort organizations. Visit the Winter Feels Good exhibit
that is part of the Youth and Future Showcase (Booth S67).
