In early November Burton Snowboards and Channel Islands Surfboards celebrated
the grand opening of their fl agship store in Osaka, Japan. Only a few weeks later,
doors fl ew open on the LA Burton and Channel Islands shop as well.
The two-story snowboard and surf shop in Osaka is the first store in Japan
to carry Burton’s latest snowboard gear and apparel and will also be the
company’s first store in Japan to feature a premium selection of Channel
Islands surfboards and surf gear. The store also features Analog clothing,
Gravis shoes, ANON sunglasses and goggles, and R.E.D. protective gear.
Burton global riders including Shaun White joined Burton Japan riders and Channel
Islands, Gravis and ANON pro riders arriving in style in a decked-out black Hummer
limo to the new 1-4-29 Shinsaibashisuji, Chuo-ku location. The doors to the new
Osaka store were opened with an offi cial Japanese opening ceremony that included
breaking the sake barrel and serving sake and “mochi” rice cakes.
More than 11,000 square feett in size, the new Melrose Ave. store had
plenty of room for the hundreds of industry heavies who stopped by for
the celebration of the first Burton and Channel Islands storefront in LA.
Guests mingled in the two ‘Hall of Boards’ lined with more than 400 surfboards
in the Channel Islands store and 80 snowboards in the Burton area.
Hot design features include a 20-foot-tall massive tree trunk with ‘roots’ made of a
smooth, poured concrete transition that begged to be skated. Other notable store
features include a separate skate shop, completely dedicated to skate hard goods
and soft goods for LA’s pavement-friendly crowd. — LORA BODMER
