SSL’s
Steve Rogers
on the Show
Based in Victor, New York, Sports Specialists Ltd.
(SSL) is a buying group of 60 retailers with 135 outlets,
from Boyne USA to Christy Sports, that, combined,
do more than $145 million in snow sports
sales every year. We caught up with SSL President
Steve Rogers at the group’s annual Winter Sports
Market to share his thoughts on the group — and
on this year’s retail climate.
“We’re telling our retailers to be cautious and
vigilant, and to remember who their best business
partners are as they prepare for the next season.
“Everyone’s excited about the new products on display
this year, in both hard- and soft goods. They’re
also all optimistic for today’s strong retail climate to
continue on during the next six-to-eight weeks.
“A lot of suppliers have recognized trends and
market opportunities this year and have responded
with exceptional products. Those are the ones that
are getting the attention of our buyers.
“As well as being concerned with the overall economy,
there are genuine concerns with such things
as the increasing cost of merchandise and declining
exchange rates. But that’s just the reality of things,
and they’re certainly not specifi c to our industry.
“On Sunday we bestowed our Suppliers of Distinction
accolades on Smith Sports Optics and Marker
LTD. They’ve been longtime supporters of SSL
retailers and our buying group by offering quality
products and exceptional customer service.
“Our goal is to become more important to our
stores in other categories 12 months a year, and
continue offering additional business services such
as insurance, freight and credit card processing.
“As a group we recognize the importance of creating
a true partnership between retailers, manufacturers
and resorts.” — EUGENE BUCHANAN
