DUNK TANKS, BEAN BAG
CHAIRS AND DJS…OH MY!
Find that and more — including ping pong tournaments, masseuses, live painting
and under-the-counter elixirs — at The Yard, a special SIA enclave for emerging
brands. Home to such up-and-coming exhibitors as Purl Wax, Dropzone and
Monument, Endeavor, Forecast and Venture Snowboards, it’s also a shared community
space where you can reserve private meeting rooms hosted by The Block
Hotel to shake off the night’s cobwebs. Plus, swing by each day at 12:30 for an
Eat-and-Greet session with Fuel TV. You can mold your body into a bean bag
to take in the company’s top snowboard shows. “It’s more of a fun, hip place
compared to the rest of the show,” says Dropzone’s Michele Freed. “Besides,
who else serves early morning bloody marys?” — EUGENE BUCHANAN

Volcom is buying Electric — and both companies are
amped. Electric shareholders get $25.25 million with up
to an additional $21 million over the next three years, and
Volcom picks up a thriving young brand. “Our companies
are very much on the same wavelength, sharing similarities
in product distribution, marketing efforts and a strong commitment
to quality and innovation,” says Richard Woolcott,
Volcom’s president and CEO. As a wholly owned subsidiary,
Electric will remain a stand-alone brand. The eight-year-old
SoCal company will keep cranking out volt-branded sunglasses,
goggles, T-shirts, bags, hats and belts, and plans
to expand into other categories. “This partnership will
enable us to grow our retail relationships and to continue to
strengthen our operational capabilities,” says Bruce Beach,
Electric’s co-president and CEO. — SUSAN SCHNIER
