WHAT IS THE MOUNTAIN KNOWS?
The Mountain Knows is a comprehensive outreach campaign that you will see on snowlink.
com, in retailer advertising and in much of SIA’s environmental tactics. The Mountain Knows
utilizes the appropriate language that consumers have told us to use from Model For Success
to get them to update their gear and apparel to get them up skiing, snowboarding
and snowshoeing on the mountain.
The Mountain Knows all. It knows your equipment is old. It knows you need expert
opinions. It knows to trade the laugh track for the real thing. It knows women should buy
women’s gear, not use men’s gear. The Mountain Knows that the happier your child is on
the mountain the quieter your child is on the mountain.
Why should suppliers, retailers, representatives and manufacturers join in The Mountain
Knows campaign?
• To be associated with YOUR snowsports association that invests in the future of
snowsports through member services, research, education, market development and
public relations
• To be a member of YOUR industry effort to promote snowsports activities and the
business of snow
• To educate and inform current and future customers about snowsports
• To increase participation in snowsports and have a community presence
• To be a voice of your industry
• To actively participate in your industry’s activities
• To utilize proven words and images to drive sales and consumer store traffi c
Most importantly, The Mountain Knows is your snowsports
industry-wide campaign for all consumer touch
points to educate consumers with the language they
have told us they need to hear to buy new gear and
increase participation in snowsports.

ABOUT SNOWSPORTS SALES ON EBAY
How many snowboards were sold on eBay during the 2006/07 season? How does that
compare to specialty sales? How many items sold by brand? By model? How much do they
sell for on eBay? How do eBay prices compare to prices in other sales channels? Who buys
more snowsports products on eBay — men or women? Teenagers or 40-year-olds? The
SIA eBay sales report answers these questions and more, including model-share reports,
brand share reports, and category top line summaries for Alpine, Snowboard, Nordic, and
Accessories (goggles and helmets). If you want to know the eBay market position of each
brand sold on eBay during a given season, or month, and you want to know how much
it’s selling for and who is buying it then this report is for you.
Did you know that more than half of the snowsports equipment sold on eBay is new?
Consider that in 2006/07 between August and March, more than 56,000 snowboards, the
equivalent of 18 percent of all snowboards sold
in specialty retail, were sold on the eBay Website.
According to the NY Times, eBay’s share of the
online auction market exceeds 95 percent and
they are growing at a rate of 30 percent each
year. The online market for snowsports is growing
fast and eBay is a big player. The SIA eBay Sales
Report summarizes data for the 2005/06 and the
2006/07 seasons on every single sale on the eBay
Website of alpine, Nordic, and snowboard equipment
as well as helmets and goggles.

NEARLY 100,000 NEW PEOPLE ON SNOW
Nearly 100,000 children and adults have been introduced to snowsports through Winter Trails
since the program launched 13 years ago. With approximately 100 locations throughout the
US, the 2008 Winter Trails, held January 12th, continued to attract families, friends, school
groups, scout troops, YM and YWCAs and Special Olympics teams training for competition.
Originally started as a snowshoe-only event by snowshoe suppliers, Winter Trails now
offers both snowshoeing and cross-country skiing. The program is free and each location
is managed locally. The www.wintertrails.org Website lists all venues and provides useful,
practical information to enable beginners to learn these snow activities.
“The beauty of Winter Trails is the collaborative way that suppliers, retailers, Nordic Center
operators and even alpine resorts pool their efforts to provide consumers with an exciting
opportunity to try snowsports — most for the fi rst time,” said Mary Jo Tarallo, director of
Education for SIA. SIA research indicates that 85 percent of Winter Trails participants are
new to snowsports. “That statistic should pique the curiosity of retailers looking to attract
new customers,” added Tarallo.
Historically, SIA has partnered with the Cross Country Ski
Areas Association and the American Hiking Society to provide
general oversight for the program, along with Reese
Brown of RDB Events, a Vermont-based events management
company.
Winter Trails is not quite fi nished for 2008. One of the largest
events, at Estes Park, Colorado, will be held on February
16th. Last year, Estes attracted about 1,500 participants
from the Boulder, Ft. Collins and Denver areas.
