SCOTT USA SIGNS ON
WITH NEW GORE-TEX LTD
The innovative designers at W.L. Gore and Associates have developed a new
method of garment construction that maintains GORE’s guarantee of waterproofness
while offering apparel manufacturers more fabric choices than ever
before. Recently GORE-TEX garments have been associated with two- and threelayer
laminate construction. This new garment construction places the GORE-TEX
membrane close to the skin, which increases wicking properties of the garment.
“The GORE-TEX membrane is laminated to the inner jacket lining (versus the fabric
on the outside of the jacket), which provides the manufacturer with many more style
options and fabrics to choose from. In this sport where jacket style is key, this is a signifi cant
advantage,” said John Reaney, Gore snowsports product specialist.
Scott USA is the only ski brand to use the GORE-TEX LTD lining in their apparel line for the
2008-09 season. Gabe Glosband, director of marketing for Scott USA’s wintersport division,
said, “The LTD liner construction is specifi cally designed to cater to freeride and freestyle
individuals who demand both style and performance from their outerwear.”
The high wicking properties of garments designed with the new liner make them attractive
to consumers who participate in high aerobic activities. Scott USA introduces two outfi ts
with the new liner: the men’s Corkscrew Jacket and women’s Skyline Jacket, both paired
with the UNLTD pants. — KC

APPAREL COMPANIES SEE GREEN
Hot Chillys
Waffl e Crew
You don’t have to be Al Gore to see that humans are taxing
the environment. Some apparel companies are trying to
lessen their carbon footprint by practicing eco-friendly
business. Here are a few examples:
Hot Chillys introduces Eco-MTF recycled yarns in three of
their products and are transitioning to use packaging and
hang tags made from recycled paperboard printed with
soy inks.
Ibex, a Woodstock, Vermont-based company, uses CVPS
Cow Power and receives 100 percent of its energy from
a manure-based renewable energy program.
NILS implemented a document scan system and
paperless invoicing that eliminates thousands of
reams of paper per year. They also use recycled cardboard
for shipping and installed energy-saving light
bulbs in their warehouse and offi ce.
Planet Earth launched the Green Collection, a sustainable
line of clothing that includes wool, linen, hemp, organic
cotton and recycled polyester.
White Sierra introduces the Happy Planet Earth Friendly
fabrics collection. The collection debuted with the Northstar
Tee, a base layer made from recycled poly, linen and bamboo
— a fast-growing tree grown without pesticides.
Smartwool’s New Zealand sheep farmers pen the sheep
only once a year for shearing; otherwise they are free
range. The wool is harvested naturally and is 100-percent
biodegradable.
Spyder uses Soy-Tek, a soy-based yarn that has natural
anti-microbial and wicking properties in some of
their products. — KRISTA CRABTREE

Bode Signs
with KJUS
There are many advantages to breaking off with the
US Ski Team and forming your own independent
race team besides choosing your own coach, lodging
and schedule. You get to pick your own uniform,
too. Bode Miller, 30, has signed on with KJUS Systems
Skiwear as his offi cial uniform supplier at least
through the 2010 Winter Olympics. “We saw this as
a great opportunity to be a part of something very
special and a part of history as Bode looks to break
Phil Mahre’s record and be the most successful US ski
racer of all time,” said Michael Collin, brand manager
for KJUS USA. (Ed: Miller tied the record by winning
the Lauberhorn Downhill on Jan. 23).
Miller will help design his signature line as well as
weigh in on other design aspects of KJUS’s collection.
His main uniform jacket for 2008/09 is the Pikes, which
will be available at retail with his sponsors patches.
His collection will also include a number of pants, PrimaLoft
jackets and vests, a shell, softshells, layering
pieces, and race suits. Due to FIS rules, however, Miller
will also suit up in Spyder racewear. “His coaches and
staff will always wear KJUS,” said Collin. “For Bode it is
a bit more complicated. He must wear the USST competition
petit su suit…during his race and training runs. However,
eve he can an wear w KJUS in the bib draw, media corral
and podium dium area —
and obviously off the slopes.”
Miller M has h won wo 27 World Worl Cup races in all fi ve disciplines.
This hi gives s him something some
